European Garden Design began as a collaboration between two friends, and has been serving the greater DC area since 1990. Both Nicolien and Corinna grew up in Europe but received their Garden Design degree at George Washington University in D.C. Together they have designed and installed numerous lovely gardens in the Metropolitan area, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, as well as in the Netherlands, Costa Rica, and Namibia. In 2014 Corinna retired and Nicolien continued as the sole owner and president of European Garden Design, continuing to instill the same European flair to her designs that EGD is known for.
History - My roots lie in the Netherlands where gardening is part of life. A garden is seen as the extra 'room' to enjoy dinner with friends and family, sharing cuttings of plants or as a retreat for solitude.
Education: After a nursing degree and a Cultural Anthropology degree at the University of Amsterdam, I immigrated to the USA where in 1989 I graduated in Garden Design at the George Washington University.
Affiliations: For 6 years I served as a board member for APLD (Association of Professional Landscape Designers) heading the communications department. During those years I erected the local DC/MD/VA Chapter presiding over the first 4 years.
Continuing education: Rooftop Landscaping; Healthcare and Landscape Design which created the opportunity to design a garden for a blind client.
Volunteer Work: Having grown up with school gardens I volunteered with three disadvantaged schools in DC. Locally I served 3 years on the Tree Commission helping to preserve old healthy trees.
